It is the question we hear more than any other at the salon, usually somewhere between the shampoo bowl and the chair. How often should I actually be coming in? The honest answer is that it depends less on the calendar and more on what your hair is doing, but there are some reliable patterns worth knowing before you book.
A short, structured cut loses its shape fastest. Anything built on a defined outline, a bob, a pixie, a fade, starts to look soft around the edges after four to six weeks because the shape depends on precision. Mid length hair holds up longer, usually eight to ten weeks. Long hair can stretch to twelve weeks or more, since the length hides small amounts of growth, though the ends still need attention on schedule.
Split ends do not repair themselves. Left alone, the split travels up the shaft, and what would have been a quarter inch trim turns into an inch off the length.

That last point is the one most people underestimate. Trimming is not the enemy of growing your hair out. It is what makes growing it out possible. Hair that is never trimmed does keep getting longer at the root, but it thins and frays at the bottom, so the overall look stops improving. Coming in for a small trim every ten to twelve weeks while you grow costs you almost no length and protects everything above it.
Colour changes the maths. If you have a root touch up, you are effectively on a four to six week cycle already, and it makes sense to combine the trim with the colour appointment rather than making a separate trip. Highlights and balayage are more forgiving because the regrowth is deliberately soft, so many clients stretch those to twelve or sixteen weeks and simply book a toner or glaze in between to refresh the tone.

Texture matters too. Fine hair shows a grown out shape quickly because there is less weight to disguise it. Thick or curly hair can carry more growth before it starts to feel heavy, but when it does go, it goes all at once, and clients often describe it as their hair suddenly refusing to sit right. That feeling is the signal, not the date in your diary.
If you are not sure where you sit, come in and ask. We would rather talk through your growth pattern and set a realistic rhythm than have you book on guesswork. Our haircuts start at $40, and a trim to maintain your existing shape starts at $25. Call us on (347) 894-1757 or book online. We are open every day from 10 AM to 7 PM at 270 Washington Ave in Carteret.
